* * * *

Tali was terrified. There was no other word for it, but he knew he had to work through that feeling.

He was scared, but he wasn’t helpless.

Both the tribe and the council assassins had trained him. He might not be as good as most of them, but he could do something about the situation. He was anxious about the gun possibly going off at any second, but he knew that if he allowed Julian to give himself up, he would never see him again.

He couldn’t allow that to happen.

He could see the emotion in Julian’s eyes. Julian thought this was his fault, that he’d put Tali in danger, and he would never forgive himself if something happened. Well, neither would Tali. Julian had no fault in this. Even though he’d killed the head of the Family and they were now coming after him because of it, he’d done the world a favor. Tali had done some research when he’d found out about it, and he’d been horrified by what he found out. The man had been a monster of the worst species, and he was glad Julian had rid the world of him.

That didn’t help their current situation, though.

He had to get away from the man holding him, and he had to do it before Julian agreed to give himself up. They both knew that there wasn’t a guarantee the man would let Tali go even if he did. But even if he did let Tali go, Tali would never see Julian again. If the man managed to grab Julian and leave, that would be it. Julian wouldn’t come back, and the thought made Tali’s stomach churn even more than it already was.

He listened to them speaking, trying to find a way to get out of the situation. He couldn’t do what he’d done earlier, not with the gun pointed at him, but he had to do something.

“I promise I’ll give myself up, but you have to let him go first.” Julian looked like he wanted to grab Tali and pull him away, but he couldn’t.

“You’re going to do what I say, and that’s it. You don’t have a choice here.” The man tightened his hold on Tali, and Tali sucked in a breath.

Julian shook his head. “How do I know you’re going to let him go even if I give myself up? I don’t trust you.”

“I don’t care if you trust me or not. If you want him to live, you’re coming with me.”

Tali took a deep breath. He knew what he had to do, and he was going to do it.

He waited until Julian started speaking again. Then, he shimmered away from the guy who was holding him. It only took him a few seconds. He reappeared behind him. Before the man could even realize what had happened, he grabbed the wrist of the hand that was holding the gun. He pulled it to the side so that even if the man shot, he’d hit the wall instead of Tali or Julian.
